Samuel stopped what he was doing and studied my face. “Because I wanted to help build your confidence,” he admitted softly.

If there hadn’t been people all around us, I would’ve either melted into a puddle of goo or launched myself at him and climbed him like a tree. In either case, I would’ve embarrassed myself, so I was glad that we weren’t alone. “You didn’t have to do that.”

The crows’ feet around his eyes became visible as he smiled. “No, but I wanted to, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while.”

A giggle slipped out as I raised my hands up to my sides. “But I haven’t really shown you how to do anything yet.”

He put the last of the items on the belt and pushed the cart out on the other side of the scanner before answering me. “I wouldn’t say that. The main reason I don’t attempt a lot in the kitchen is because it’s always seemed like a drudgery. My daughter may not realize it, but her mom didn’t love it either. Before we had Melissa, we ate more meals out than we did at home. But your passion for creating delicious meals has inspired me.” He shook his head, looking completely bewildered. “You even managed to make food shopping fun.”

While he scanned the groceries, I thought about what he said. It was silly that he’d accepted this arrangement when he knew he didn’t really need it, and I’d definitely be returning the check he’d given me. I hadn’t cashed it yet since I’d been scared I’d screw up before the ten lessons were over, and he’d want a refund. On the other hand, how amazing was it that he’d committed to spending ten evenings with me to help build my confidence? Who did stuff like that? I waited until all the bags were in the backseat and we were both buckled into the truck before I said, “Since you were doing me a favor, how about I prepare some things for you for the coming week before I go tonight?”

He glanced at the watch on his wrist, and I bit back my disappointment. Tonight was the last time I had a reason to be around Samuel, and I didn’t want it to end. It had taken quite a while to make it through the store, though, so he probably just wanted to get home and relax. “Are you sure? I feel bad taking up your whole evening, but I wouldn’t say no to you showing me how to make that egg casserole. My grandma used to make something like that for holidays, and I’ve missed it.”

“Sure!” Then I covered my mouth with my hand when I realized how loud I’d screamed it. “Sorry,” I said in a normal tone. “I’d be happy to. None of my friends are around tonight, anyway, so I’d end up at the tavern or sitting home alone. I’ll whip something up for you for dinner while I’m at it.
